버크셔 해서웨이 부회장을 지냈으며, 워런 버핏의 절친이자 든든한 파트너, 찰리 멍거가 살아생전 투자에 관해 남겼던 주옥같은 말을 엮어 만든 책(절대 찰리 멍거가 직접 쓴 책은 아니다).
한 구절 한 구절 영/한 버전과 함께 이어지는 저자의 해석도 함께 읽으면서 이번에는 주제별로 나뉜 구절을 타자 필사하면서 곱씹기로 했다.

제2부에서는 경제에 관한 찰리 멍거의 명언을 기록했다. 특히 여기서는 대한민국에 관해 찰리 멍거가 남긴 말이 있어 흥미로웠다.

We have monetized houses in this country in a way that's never occurred before. Ask Joe how he bought a new Cadillac-from borrowing on his house. We have financial institutions, including those with big names, extending high-cost credit to the least able people. I find a lot of it revolting. Just because it's a free market doesn't mean it's honorable.

우리는 지금까지 존재하지 않던 방식으로 이 나라의 집들을 수익화했다. 이웃집 조에게 어떻게 새로운 캐딜락을 살 수 있었는지 물어보라. 집을 담보로 돈을 빌린 것이다. 대형 금융사들을 포함한 금융 기관은 대출 기준에 적합하지 않은 사람에게도 높은 이자를 받고 대출을 해준다. 나는 그런 행위에 혐오감을 느낀다. 자유 시장이 꼭 명예로운 것은 아니다.

Free Market Folly
These crazy booms should be watched. Alan Greenspan didn't think so. He's a capable man but he's an idiot. You should not make him the father of all banking. His hero is Ayn Rand. It's an unlikely place to look for wisdom. A lot of people think that if an ax murderer goes around killing people in a free market it's all right.

Banking Deregulation
People really thought that giving a predatory class of people the ability to do whatever they wanted was free-market enterprise. It wasn't. It was a legalized armed robbery. And it was incredibly stupid.

Wall Street Excesses
We have a higher percentage of the intelligentsia engaged in buying and selling pieces of paper and promoting trading activity than in any past ear. A lot of what I see now reminds me of Sodom and Gomorrah. You get activity feeding on itself, envy and imitation. When it happend in the past, there was bad consequences.

Printing Money
I think democracies and prone to inflation because politicians will naturally spend - they have the power to print money and will use money to get votes.

Asset Inflation
I remember the $0.05 hamburger and a $0.40-per hour minimum wage, so I've seen a tremendous amount of inflation in my lifetime. Did it ruin the investment climate? I think not.

Oil Reserves
I think the hydrocarbon reserves in the United States are one of the most precious things we have, every bit as precious as the topsil of Iowa. Just as I don't want to export all the topsoil in Iowa to Iran or someplace, just because they are willing to give us some money, I love the hydrocarbon reserves we have in the ground. The fashion is to be independent and to use them up as fast as we can. I think that's insanity as a national policy.

석유와 천연가스 매장량이 미국이 보유한 값진 것 중 하나이며, 한방울 한방울이 아이오와의 표토 만큼이나 귀중하다. 사고 싶어 하는 사람이 있다는 이유로 아이오와의 표토 모두를 이란 혹은 다른 나라로 수출하는 것을 원치 않는 것만큼이나 미국 땅에 매장되어 있는 석유와 천연가스를 아끼고 사랑한다. 최근의 흐름은 해외에 석유와 천연가스 공급을 의존하지 않고 국내에서 생산하여 가능한 빨리 소진하는 것이라 알고 있다. 이는 미친 국가 정책이라 생각한다.

At the same time every Korean child came home from grade school, and worked with a tutor for four full hours in the afternoon and the evening, driven by these Tiger Moms. Are you surprised when you lose to people like that? Only if you're a total idiot.

한국인은 맨땅에서 자동차 산업을 시작했다. 일주일에 84시간을 일하며 10년 넘게 야근 수당도 받지 않았다. 동시에 모든 한국 어린이는 하교 후에 엄한 엄마의 지도 아래 오후와 저녁 4시간 동안 과외를 받았다. 그런 사람에게 졌다는 사실이 놀라운가? 놀라는 사람이 바보 천치다.

If we're going to prosper, we have to work. We have to have people subject to carrots and sticks. If you take away the stick the whole system won't work. You can't vote yourself rich. It's an idiotic idea.

Derivative Danger
If you intelligently trade derivatives it's like a license to steal, so you can understand why they all want to do it... but what is the big plus in having everyone gamble with everyone else? I lived in a world with low gambling for decades when I was younger and I liked it better. I think it was better for the country. It's like having thousands of professional poker players. What damn good are they doing for anybody?

You cannot just go invest in China, however. The first movers can get killed. There's a saying in Indonesia: 'What you're calling corrupt is Asian family values.'

Free Trade
I don't see how we bring back that age where an uneducated man can march ahead rapidly. As long as we have free trade and worldwide competition, and I don't want to stop having free trade with a big nuclear power like China. China and the United States have to get along. Each country would be out of its mind not to get along with the other. I think trade helps us to get along.

If I were running the world I would have low corporate taxes, and get at the yearning for equality some other way, like consumption taxes.

Reducing Standards
The whole world is better when yoh don't reduce engineering standards in finance. We skipped a total disaster by a hair's breath... I'm a big fan of people who took us through the crisis. I'm not a big fan of people who caused the crisis. Some of them deserve to be in the lowest circle of hell.
기준 낮추기
금융 관련 규제의 기준을 낮추지 않아야 전 세계가 좋아진다. 우리는 총체적 난국을 아슬아슬하게 피했다. 나는 위기를 돌파한 사람의 열렬한 팬이다. 위기를 초래한 사람은 그리 좋아하지 않는다. 그런 사람 중 일부는 지옥의 최하층으로 가야 마땅하다.
